The committee have had a busy summer of planning.

We have developed 2 programmes to improve the club this year.

  • First Aid /CPR/ Defibrillator training for all coaches and managers.
  • We also have produced an E manual for all coaches and managers which defines our club code of ethics, child protection and bullying guidelines, and outlines responsibilities for managers and coaches throughout the season.
  • We have Garda vetted all coaches and managers and all junior coaches too.
    Junior Coach Development/TY Gaisce award programme : In order to increase the confidence and skills for teenage players and to promote leadership, we have developed an innovative Junior Coaching Programme. This is open to any of the underage players aged 15 and up.

The programme consists of

  • 30 minute introductory talk , sign up and establishment of participants personal goals in developing their coaching skills.
    • 2 hour session with learning about Gross motor skills and the development of athletic skills through fundamental movement. This session also addresses how to grade drills depending on skill and movement level of the child
    • 2 hour CPR/ First Aid session : participants learn the basics of CPR, how to use and AED Defibrilltor, how to use administer and inhaler or an epi pen correctly, as well as the basics of first aid principles and concussion.
    • 1.5 hour Train the Trainer Session with international club coach Karl Kilbride, where the participants will learn the basics of coaching a basketball session.
    • Skill sessions with Development section of the club (participants must complete 26 weeks of development/ special Olympics/ wheelchair basketball sessions)
    • Organisational skill acquisition : helping with registration, gear collections, fundraising events in the club.

The goal of this programme is to encourage leadership, coaching skills and a spirit of volunteerism among the youth of the club, so that they learn the value of “giving back” to the club for future years.
